New findings from a team using the international Gemini Observatory and the WIYN 3.5m Telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory suggest that Earth-sized worlds could be lurking undiscovered in binary star systems, hidden in the glare of their parent stars.

Discovered in data from the Dark Energy Survey taken with the Blanco 4m Telescope at CTIO, Comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein is estimated to be 100-200 km across and about 1000 times the mass of a typical comet, making it arguably the largest comet discovered in modern times. On its highly elongated orbit, it journeys from the distant Oort Cloud over millions of years and will make its closest approach to the Sun in 2031.
