Proposal Attachment Templates

NOIRLab proposals require two PDF attachments to be included with your proposal. Attachment templates in various formats are provided below and can be imported into various tools. For LaTex users, Overleaf and direct download (ZIP) options are available. For document editing tools such as Word or LibreOffice a document template is provided for each attachment type.

1. Standard Proposal Attachment (for surveys see below)

Note: This section of the proposal should be anonymous

Select a standard attachment template format from the available options below:
Document | Overleaf (LaTex) | ZIP (LaTex)

An example proposal attachment is provided here which can be used as a guide: Example Attachment

The main attachment should include the following information:

Scientific Justification:

Give the scientific justification for the proposed observations. This section should consist of paragraphs of text followed by any references and up to three figures and captions. Be sure to include overall significance to astronomy. THE SCIENTIFIC JUSTIFICATION SHOULD BE LIMITED TO ONE PAGE (the review panels have requested that we not send them more than one page), with up to two additional pages for references, figures (no more than three), and captions.

Experimental Design:

This section should consist of text only. The length of this section is limited to a single printed page. Describe your overall observational program. How will these observations contribute toward the accomplishment of the goals outlined in the science justification? If you've requested long-term status, justify why this is necessary for successful completion of the science.

2. Survey Proposal Attachment (survey programs only)

Note: This section of the proposal should be anonymous

Select a standard attachment template format from the available options below:
Document | Overleaf (LaTex) | ZIP (LaTex)

An example proposal attachment is provided here which can be used as a guide: Example Attachment

Management Plan:

The Management plan should describe the overall plan for conducting the proposed survey. Be sure to include: 1) Approach: Discuss the organizational plan to execute the tasks required to complete the research goals and delivery of the data products. Include plans to support the observing runs, the pipeline processing plan, data reduction and analysis, archiving plan, data dissemination plan, and coordination of the survey with non-NOIRLab facilities or data sources. 2) Personnel requirements: Discuss the roles of the survey team members in an anonymized way. Anticipated levels of participation for individuals should be discussed in the Team Information and Relevant Background attachment. 3) You may include an anonymized description of institutional/other support Additional information can be presented in the Team Information and Relevant
Background attachment. Limit text to one page.

Release of Data:

Describe the data products (reduced observations, single or stacked images, spectra, object catalogs, and so on) to be released, as well as the timeline and mechanism of their release to the community. Please differentiate between intermediate products developed during the execution of the survey versus the final products likely to be produced after the full observations have been obtained. Limit text to one page

3. Team Information and Relevant Background Attachment

Note: This section of the proposal DOES NOT need to be anonymous

Select a standard attachment template format from the available options below:
Document | Overleaf (LaTex) | ZIP (LaTex)

An example proposal attachment is provided here which can be used as a guide: Example Attachment

The team information and relevant background attachment should include the following information:

Team Information

The Team Information section is an opportunity for the PI to identify
other information relevant to the science of or execution of the proposal (not a list of co-Is).

Use of Other Facilities or Resources

This section should consist of text only (no figures). Please limit to ONE page of printed text.

We are interested in understanding how observations made through NOIRLab observing opportunities complement or support data from other facilities both on the ground and in space. We will use this information to guide the evolution of the NOIRLab program.

a) Please describe how the proposed observations complement data from other facilities, including private observatories and both ground- and space-based telescopes. In addressing this question, take a broad view of your research program. Are the data to be obtained through this proposal going to help select samples for detailed observations using larger telescopes or from space observatories? Are these data going to be directly combined with data obtained elsewhere to test a hypothesis? Will these observations have relevance to other observations, even though the proposal stands on its own? For each of these other facilities, indicate the nature of the observations (yours or those of others), and describe the importance of the observations proposed here in the context of the entire program.

b) Do you currently have a grant that would provide resources to support the data processing, analysis, and publication of the observations proposed here?

Previous Use of Facilities Available Through NOIRLab

How effectively have you used the facilities available through NOIRLab in the past? List allocations of telescope time on NOIRLab facilities to the Principal Investigator during the past 2 years, together with the current status of the data (cite publications where appropriate).
