GMOS-S CCD replacement

July 17, 2023

During the week of 24 July, replacement of the middle CCD (CCD2) in the GMOS instrument on Gemini South (GMOS-S) will begin. Currently this CCD is suffering from a saturated amplifier (amp #5); the issue and options for workarounds are described at this link. The replacement work, as well as internal realignment, will take up to five weeks. On-sky commissioning may be complete, depending on the weather, by the end of August. This means that GMOS-S will likely not be available until the beginning of September.
