GPI Leaving Cerro Pachón for Upgrade
May 27, 2022
The Gemini Planet Imager (GPI), an instrument at Gemini South in Chile, is undergoing an upgrade.
Last week GPI was packed into six boxes and all the boxes have now left Cerro Pachón. The instrument is heading for Notre Dame where it will go through a significant upgrade of all components and will then go to Gemini North in 2024 as GPI 2.0.
The instrument will be driven the 500 kilometers (310 miles) from Cerro Pachón to Santiago where it will fly out directly to Atlanta, then to Chicago, and finally be taken to Notre Dame on a truck.
