Happy Birthday Gemini North!

June 13, 2024

On 25 June the Gemini North telescope will celebrate 25 years since first light! The richness of Gemini's discoveries has revolutionized our vision of the Universe over the past quarter-century. From capturing the first direct image of a multi-planet system, to studying supermassive black holes, to witnessing distant merging galaxies, Gemini North continues to advance our knowledge of astronomy and astrophysics.

Gemini North's collection of great successes is a testament to the dedication, vision, and hard work of our excellent team of astronomers, astrophysicists, engineers, instrument designers, and technicians capable of building and operating one of the world's greatest telescopes.

As we celebrate this significant milestone, we are reminded of how fortunate we are to access Maunakea and of the importance of balancing the needs of the astronomical community with the preservation of Maunakea’s sacred, cultural, and environmental heritage.

Here’s to the next 25 years of success and beyond: happy birthday Gemini North!
