Kitt Peak Tour
In addition to the main conference events, we will be offering a tour of Kitt Peak National Observatory on Wednesday at an additional cost of $40 (+ Eventbrite fees), limited to 40 participants. You can reserve your spot on Eventbrite when you register for the conference. This cost includes a bagged lunch.
Kitt Peak National Observatory, part of NSF NOIRLab, is home to one of the largest arrays of optical and radio telescopes in the world. During this tour, you will be visiting some of the premier astronomical facilities on the summit. These may include:
- The 4m Mayall Telescope, host to the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), a powerful multi-object spectrograph funded by the US Department of Energy Office of Science. DESI is on a 5 year mission to measure the effect of dark energy on the expansion of the universe using spectra of 30 million galaxies.
- The 3.5m WIYN Telescope, home to NEID, an Extreme Precision Radial Velocity (EPRV) Spectrograph. NEID is part of a joint effort between NASA and the NSF to search for and characterize exosolar planets, particularly earth-like planets in the habitable zone of nearby stars.
- For more information, see: Kitt Peak Public Tours
Kitt Peak is just shy of 7,000 feet (2096 meters) above sea level at the summit. Temperatures are typically 15 to 20 degrees F (7-10 degrees C) cooler than in Tucson and often windy. Dress appropriately and bring layers of clothing. Closed-toed shoes are required inside of summit facilities.
Non-US citizens should bring a passport as there is a US Border Patrol checkpoint going to and from the summit.
Kitt Peak National Observatory sits atop I’oligam Du’ag (Manzanita Shrub Mountain). Astronomers are honored to be permitted to conduct scientific research on the sacred mountain located in the homelands of the Schuk Toak District within the Tohono O’odham Nation. We honor their past, present, and future generations, who have lived here for time immemorial and will forever call this place home.
