Gemini Speckle Imaging of Dual Quasar Candidates

September 24, 2021

Using engineering time at Gemini North, a team led by Steve Howell demonstrated that sub-arcsec dual quasar candidates as faint as r ∼ 19 can be detected and resolved using speckle interferometric imaging. The dual quasar candidate J2122−0026 (Chen et al., 2021) was observed for 45 minutes on 2021 August 8 UT using the 'Alopeke speckle instrument. The results, as recently reported in Research Notes of the AAS, show that the 'Alopeke imaging observations agree with and confirm Hubble Space Telescope imaging of the pair separated at ∼ 0.5 arcseconds.
