Integral field (3D) spectroscopy is a powerful new capability being added to telescopes at most of the major ground-based observatories. I will review the different technical approaches to delivering integral field capabilities across a wide wavelength range and the unique science that the technique enables. This will include a detailed discussion of the design, manufacture and test of two new integral field units which have been developed at the Centre for Advanced Instrumentation at Durham University for deployment in the GNIRS spectrograph on Gemini-N. Finally I will review the exciting new prospects offered by multi-object integral field spectroscopy and new facilities being planned for the next generation of Extremely Large Telescopes.
