Spiral galaxy NGC 55
This image of the nearby galaxy NGC55 was taken with the National Science Foundation's 0.9-meter telescope at Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory in Chile. NGC55 is at a distance of about five million light-years and resides in a gathering of galaxies known as the Sculptor Group. The red nebulosities are regions of active star formation in the galaxy.
