Olga Cucciati: Protoclusters of galaxies: the golden synergy between observations and simulations

Protoclusters of galaxies are the most promising sites where to study the co-evolution of dark matter and stellar mass build-up in the early universe. Unfortunately, protoclusters are elusive targets, due to their low density contrast and to the fact that they are defined by the nature of their descendants (i.e. their putative evolution into galaxy clusters). For this reason, observational studies of protoclusters require, in synergy, an attentive comparison with simulations of structure and galaxy formation and evolution. And even so, these studies are more easily performed on the largest and most prominent structures. I will show a few preliminary analyses on how beautifully the synergy between observations and simulations could work, applied to the Hyperion proto-supercluster at z~2.45.
