Gemini First Light Anniversary Image Contest

The Toby Jug Nebula, as imaged by Gemini South, obtained by NOIRLab’s Communication, Education & Engagement team as part of the NOIRLab Legacy Imaging Program.
To celebrate the Gemini North First Light and Gemini South First Light 25th anniversaries, 24 June 2024 and November 2025, respectively, an image contest has been launched for schools in Hawai‘i and Chile. Classrooms are invited to participate in a poll asking which type of astronomical object should be imaged by the Gemini telescopes in each hemisphere. These images will be featured in a press release in November 2025, celebrating the anniversary.
The five types of astronomical objects are:
For the northern hemisphere, there will be two objects to choose from for each object type. In the southern hemisphere, there will be one object for each object type.
