Gemini Fast Turnaround: July 2023

July 7, 2023

We are pleased to announce the monthly Call for Proposals for the Gemini Fast Turnaround (FT) Program. The upcoming deadline is 12:00 (noon) Hawai‘i Standard Time on 31 July 2023. Proposals are being accepted for both Gemini North and South. For successful proposals this cycle, observations will be active in the queue September–November 2023.

For Gemini South, GMOS-S and Flamingos 2 (including Flamingos 2 MOS mode) are available this cycle, and both IGRINS and Zorro will be available for at least part of the cycle. Note that Gemini South will be closed for a telescope shutdown for a period in September–October. For Gemini North, GMOS-N, GNIRS, and MAROON-X are offered. Make sure to check the 23B instrument schedules for detailed availability, or check with the FT team at fast.turnaround@gemini.edu. Please see the Call for Proposals for more information.

Additionally, please be aware that we are offering FT time for Gemini South for only the first 3 monthly cycles of 23B. This call is for the second cycle. The available time for the latter three cycles at Gemini South will be devoted to a special shared risk GHOST call, expected to be announced on 1 September.

The FT program has been used to conduct pilot studies, complete observations for existing data sets, follow up newly discovered objects, and much more. Proposers will have two weeks to peer review up to eight other proposals. Results will be announced around the 21st of the month following the deadline. Data for successful programs can be obtained as early as one to two weeks after that. The FT program uses a dual anonymous review process (DARP). Proposals must use the FT DARP proposal templates and be anonymized as described in the Call for Proposals
