Kama'āina Observatory Experience Returns
April 15, 2025
The Kamaʻāina Observatory Experience (KOE) is a long-standing initiative by the Maunakea Observatories (MKO), designed specifically for residents of Hawaiʻi. Kamʻāina translates to “children of the land” in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (the Native Hawaiian language). The program fosters a closer connection between the community and the world-class astronomical facilities atop Maunakea through an all-inclusive experience with transportation, food, and cultural and scientific presentations provided.
The first public KOE tour since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic took place in March 2025. Led by the Hawaiʻi-based members of the NOIRLab Communications, Education, & Engagement (CEE) team, the 2025 event reaffirmed MKO’s commitment to serving the Hawaiʻi community.
Participants on this tour explored Gemini North and enjoyed the serene beauty of Maunakea under calm and clear weather conditions. This setting provided an ideal backdrop to reconnect with the rich heritage of Maunakea and cutting-edge science of the observatories.
Public KOE tours are held on the first Saturday of each month, rotating between the different Maunakea observatories. The Kamaʻāina Observatory Experience represents a renewed effort to engage the local community, celebrate the astronomical achievements of the observatories, and create meaningful connections between the people of Hawaiʻi and their unique environment.
