Winter AAS Meeting Event: Extragalactic Astronomy with Gemini Large and Long Programs (LPs)

September 18, 2020

The US NGO, in collaboration with Gemini Observatory, plans a Science Splinter Session at the 237th AAS Meeting on extragalactic astronomy with the Gemini large and long programs (LPs). The Session welcomes students and is open to all interested present and future Gemini users. The event will showcase mature and productive Gemini LP programs in the science area of extragalactic astronomy. Additional talks will focus on instruments and data platforms that are important for future Gemini LPs.

The confirmed speakers and topics are:

  • Elizabeth Buckley-Geer (Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory) — Spectroscopic Confirmation of Dark Energy Survey Strong Lensing Systems and Spectra for Photometric Redshift Calibration
  • Mansi Kasliwal (Caltech) — Rapid Spectroscopy of Elusive Transients and Young Supernovae
  • Yue Shen (University of Illinois) — A GNIRS Near-IR Spectroscopic Survey of z>5.7 Quasars
  • Michael Balogh (University of Waterloo) — The GOGREEN Survey of dense galaxy environments at 1<z<1.5
  • Suresh Sivanandam (University of Toronto) — GIRMOS and prospects for high redshift extragalactic astronomy in the future at Gemini
  • Stephanie Juneau (NOIRLab) — Gemini LPs and the Data Lab science platform: Data & services to maximize scientific discoveries
