NOIRLab Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program in Chile

June 24, 2024

NOIRLab is starting a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program at its site in La Serena, Chile. The program, which builds on the success of the earlier NOAO REU program in Chile, will initially be offered in the 2025 Chilean summer (January – March).

In this program, students will have the opportunity to

  • work closely with a NOIRLab research mentor on an exciting research topic, and
  • experience professional astronomy observing first hand.

Our program will also include

  • an introduction to coding in Python for astronomy,
  • a professional development program, and
  • Chile-specific astronomy-related enrichment activities designed to enhance understanding of and appreciation for the local and cultural context in which astronomy operates.

Our students will not only gain experience with front-line techniques of modern astrophysics, but also develop critical thinking, data analysis, teamwork, science communication, and other professional skills applicable to a wide array of careers in STEM. Students will be based in La Serena and provided with a stipend and housing on the NOIRLab campus.

The application deadline is 23 September 2024.

Further details are available on our website. Please encourage interested students who are U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or U.S. permanent residents to apply. We welcome questions about the program to Joan Najita and Guillermo Damke.
