Region of the M83 disk

A 30 arcsecond region of the M83 disk is shown in a green-light pre-outburst image from Magellan (left) and the post-outburst image from Gemini South (center). The scaled, subtracted image at right shows the excess emission in the new data at the ULX position. Note that the Magellan image was obtained in about 0.4 arcsecond seeing and the Gemini image in below-average seeing of about 0.7 arcsecond.
