Foreground cluster MS 1358+32

The foreground cluster MS 1358+32 acts as a gravitational lens to amplify the light from the z=4.92 galaxy observed with NIFS on Gemini North (inset). Most of the galaxies that appear yellow in this optical image obtained with HST's Advanced Camera for Surveys are members of the cluster. The blue square marks the location of the image of the distant galaxy. The dark patches in the inset figure show strong rest frame [O II] emission measured with NIFS, where intense star formation occurs.
