Gaia has provided distances to around 1.5 billion stars and revolutionized stellar astrophysics. Gaia has finally revealed the population of faint white dwarf stars in the solar neighborhood. We use this dataset and follow-up data from Gemini to answer fundamental questions about the nature of white dwarfs, including their mass distribution, crystallization, ultracool, and ultramassive white dwarfs. I will present newly updated constraints on the fraction of merger products among the ultramassive white dwarfs in the solar neighborhood, and highlight the discoveries of the most massive pulsating white dwarf and an isolated white dwarf with a spin period of only 70 seconds.
