Exploring the Nature of Symbiotic Stars and Their Evolution via Raman-scattered O VI Features
Symbiotic stars are interacting binary systems consisting of an evolved giant transferring mass to a hot compact object, mostly a white dwarf. The optical spectra of symbiotic stars have very unique broad emission features at 6825Å and 7082Å called Raman-scattered O VI lines. The observational data show that the profiles of the Raman O VI features are very diverse, ranging from single-peaked to triple-peaked. According to previous studies, the Raman O VI features provide information on the kinematics of the emission region and the geometry of the scattering region. It is interesting that some objects have strikingly similar profiles of the Raman O VI features, which has a potential implication: symbiotic stars having analogous Raman O VI profiles are in a similar evolutionary stage. Therefore we expect to infer the evolutionary stage of a given symbiotic binary from the statistical study of its Raman O VI profile. In this talk, I will present the high-resolution spectra of the Raman-emitting symbiotic systems obtained through spectroscopic campaigns with Gemini-North/GRACES, Magellan-Clay/MIKE and the application of its statistical study. This comprehensive study will bring us closer to understanding the origin of the Raman O VI features and further explore the nature and evolution of symbiotic systems.
